I Ralph Flippen of Cumberland County do make my last will and testament in manner following Imprimis I give & devise to my loving wife during her natural life one hundred and fifty seven acres of land including the plantation whereon I now live also  the use & profits of the following negroes towitt Prince, Moll, Ursula & Cazar during her natural life together with the use of all my stock & household goods all which I intend to be in full compensation of dower & charge of maintaining and educating my children hereafter named during their ,minoriety towit Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Philip, Robert and Jacob.  Item I give & devise to my son John Flippen two ewes & lambs and if he shall pay to Alexander Trent a debt now due to the said Trent from him my said son John in such a manner as to clear my ex'rs  hereafter named  from the payment of that debt or any part of it then I give and devise to him my said son John one negro boy named Joe which is now living with him and if he my said son John does not pay the said debt in manner aforesaid then I give the said negro boy to my son Francis Flippen.  I also give & devise to my said son Francis [p. 11] Flippen one hundred & fifty seven acres of land including the plantation wheron he now lives, and if my said son John shoud [sic] pay the debt abovementioned so that my said son Francis should not be intitled to the negro Joe then I give & devise to my said son Francis the negro boy Cezar above mentioned to my wife.  Item I give & devise to my daughter Jane Flippen one negro named Philis now living at my son John Flippens.  Item I give to my daughter Elizabeth Flippen one negro named Cutena.  Item I give & devise to my daughter Mary Flippen one negro named Philis.  Item I give & devise to my son Philip to him & his heirs forever one hundred & fifty seven acres of land to be laid off adjoining to my son Francis's part and one negro named Charles. Item I give & devise to my son Robert Flippen to him & his heirs forever one hundred & fifty seven acres of land & one negro named Jenny.  Item I give devise to my son Jacob Flippen to him and to his heirs forever the tract or peice [sic] of land  above given to my wife during her life.  I also give to my said son Jacob one negroe named Simon   It is my will and desire that my son Philip shall be under the care of my son Francis and in case he my said son Philip shoud die before he comes to the age of twenty one years   Then the estate devised to him I give & devise to my son Francis to him & his heirs forever.  Notwithstanding the land before given to my son Francis is not before mentioned in this my will to him & his heirs forever yet I do declare it to be so intended and I also declare it to be my intent that the legacies before given to my children that are not yet come to the age of twenty one should not be delivered to them til that age & that if any of them my said children except my son Philip shoud die before they come that age then it is my will & desire that the legacies before devised to them as well as what will be hereafter given to them should be equally devided among the survisors of them except my son John who is intended to be excluded from any part of it.  I do appoint that after the death of my said wife the land negros, stock & household goods allotted to her shall be devided among all my children except  my sons John & Frances who I do exclude from any part of the said devision.  Lastly I do appoint my loving wife Martha Flippen executrix & my son Francis Flippen executor of this my last will & testament.  Witness my hand & seal the XXIV day of February MDCCIXVII.

At a court held for Cumberland county 28th May 1770.
This last will and testament of Ralph Flippen deceased was proved by George Carrington and William Flippen witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Martha Flippen executrix and Francis Flippen executor therein named who made oath according to law certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form giving security whereupon they together with John Scott, George Carrington and Benjamin Bedford their securities in law into bond according to law.
